Ice Melt

Gunther’s Bagged and Bulk Ice Melt

Brace yourself: The Farmer’s Almanac predicts a frigid, frosty, and wet winter season for the Midwest. As snow and ice coat our roadways, business owners will soon search for ice melt suppliers and wonder: “Where can I buy ice melt?” Gunther Salt provides much-needed salt and ice melt products to tackle incoming winter weather — at a competitive price.

Our bulk ice melt and salt pricing for winter 2024-2025 has remained the same with two exceptions. Buy Louisiana rock salt in bulk or 50# and 25# bags, Blue Blast in 50# bags and 12# Jugs, Heat Blast in 50# and 25# bags, calcium chloride pellets in 50# bags, and magnesium chloride ice melt pellets in 50# bags. There has been a slight increase in pricing for calcium chloride and magnesium chloride.

Rock Salt: How It Works

At a microscopic level, ice has a crystal lattice structure. Salt disrupts the pattern, breaking the hydrogen bonds that keep ice in a solid state — turning it back into water. Gunther Salt products change the melting point of ice to clear roadways, sidewalks, and more. Our ice melt products are suitable for use in winter extremes from 15° above zero to 5° below zero.

As a salt and ice melt packager and supplier, we provide multiple options for salt and ice melt — explore our products below.

Ice Control Salt

Gunther Salt’s ice control Salt is a Louisiana mined rock salt that tackles extreme weather conditions. This bulk rock salt is treated with an anti-caking agent to reduce clumping and is available in 15-25-ton loads. Our bags of Ice Control Salt are in 25# and 50# bags, available for delivery or pick up at our St. Louis facility.

Sizes Available: 25-ton Dump Truck, 1-ton Tote Bag (2000# Bag), 50# Bag, 25# Bag

Blue Blast®

Blue Blast is one of our most popular ice melt products — so Gunther is starting the 2024 winter season with a higher inventory. It contains Louisiana rock salt and liquid magnesium chloride ice melt with a corrosion inhibitor and our blue dye formula. The water-soluble blue dye allows users to see where the product has been spread.

Sizes Available: 50# Bag and 12# Jug

Heat Blast®

Heat Blast Premium Ice Melter is a unique blend of magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium chloride. Compared to more expensive ice melts like calcium chloride, Heat Blast is budget-friendly and effective below 0° F.

Sizes Available: 50# Bag and 25# Bag

Calcium Chloride Ice Melt Pellets

Our calcium chloride ice melt products are fast-acting and effective. Calcium chloride attracts moisture from its surroundings, allowing it to melt ice at extreme temperatures (down to -30° F). As a pelletized product, it works best in a spreader and melts faster than flake products.

Sizes Available: 50# Bag

Magnesium Chloride Ice Melt Pellets

Magnesium chloride pellets are fast-acting and effective at low temperatures (down to -25° F). Ice melt pellets work better in a spreader and act faster than flake products. An ideal product for melting in extremely low temperatures, it absorbs moisture and leaves little residue behind — making cleanup easy.

Sizes Available: 50# Bag

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Gunther Salt is a salt and ice melt packager and supplier operating from our headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. We sell and deliver individual ice melt products to organizations across the Midwest. Please inquire at sales@gunthersalt.com or place an order at orders@gunthersalt.com.  Phone orders can be placed calling 314-241-7075 or 800-873-7258

  • The freezing point of water is 32° F. When the temperature drops, hydrogen bonds between water molecules strengthen to form a crystalline structure known as ice. Salt weakens these bonds and lowers the freezing point of water.

However, salt and salt blends can only withstand certain temperatures — once the temperature drops below 10° F, the crystalline structures are too strong for salt to break on its own. For extreme cold, premium ice melt products, such as Calcium Chloride and Magnesium Chloride, are needed.

  • When storing bulk ice melt, the most important factor to consider is moisture. Salt and salt blend bags should be stored in a dry location — ideally inside or under a cover or tarp.  Salt and ice melt blends can clump due to exposure to moisture, whether it’s from humidity in the air or liquid on the ground.

  • One of the biggest mistakes businesses and homeowners make is waiting until winter weather hits to search for an ice melt supplier. To avoid setbacks with ice melt products, it’s best to plan ahead. We recommend purchasing and storing salt and ice melt products before winter hits in November.

  • The amount of salt products you’ll need depends on what you’re using it for. A few bags for each storm is typically enough for homeowners. However, commercial snow plowers will need anywhere from 1 pallet (50-100 bags) to several pallets of salt or ice melt, depending on the amount of surface area that needs to be cleared of snow and ice.
