The freezing point of water is 32° F. When the temperature drops, hydrogen bonds between water molecules strengthen to form a crystalline structure known as ice. Salt weakens these bonds and lowers the freezing point of water.

However, salt and salt blends can only withstand certain temperatures — once the temperature drops below 10° F, the crystalline structures are too strong for salt to break on its own. For extreme cold, premium ice melt products, such as Calcium Chloride and Magnesium Chloride, are needed. 

When storing bulk ice melt, the most important factor to consider is moisture. Salt and salt blend bags should be stored in a dry location — ideally inside or under a cover or tarp.  Salt and ice melt blends can clump due to exposure to moisture, whether it’s from humidity in the air or liquid on the ground.

One of the biggest mistakes businesses and homeowners make is waiting until winter weather hits to search for an ice melt supplier. To avoid setbacks with ice melt products, it’s best to plan ahead. We recommend purchasing and storing salt and ice melt products before winter hits in November. 

The amount of salt products you’ll need depends on what you’re using it for. A few bags for each storm is typically enough for homeowners. However, commercial snow plowers will need anywhere from 1 pallet (50-100 bags) to several pallets of salt or ice melt, depending on the amount of surface area that needs to be cleared of snow and ice.
